How do I get my business to show up in ChatGPT answers?
Updated 22 October 2026. Veloce Marketing, Perth.
Short answer: when someone asks ChatGPT who to use, it looks on the web, reads a handful of pages, then names three or four businesses. To be one of them, ChatGPT has to be able to find you, read you, and see other people talking about you.
Someone is being named for what you do right now. If it is not you, that customer calls them. And the names change every time the question is asked, so this is not a job you do once.
How ChatGPT picks the names
- It searches the web. OpenAI says ChatGPT sends searches to search engines such as Bing, and it has its own reader too, called OAI-SearchBot. Then it reads the pages that come back.
- It reads your pages, if it is let in. OpenAI says any public website can show up in ChatGPT, as long as OAI-SearchBot is not blocked.
- It reads what other people say about you. Reviews, listings, local news, "best of" lists. In July 2026, Yelp agreed to give ChatGPT its reviews, photos and business details to show in answers.
- It names the businesses whose pages answer the question. A page that answers the exact question, in plain words, gets used. A page that says "quality solutions" gives it nothing to use.
- The names change every time. Ask the same question ten times and you can get different names. So the real question is not "am I in?" but "how often am I in?"
The six jobs that get you named
1. Let ChatGPT in. Free. Some hosting companies block OAI-SearchBot. If it is blocked, you cannot be named, no matter how good your pages are. Ask your web person to check it is allowed in.
2. Get your site on Bing. Free. Register your site with Bing Webmaster Tools and send it your pages. ChatGPT sends searches to Bing, so a site Bing has read is a site ChatGPT can find.
3. Say exactly what you do, and where. On your own site, in plain words: the job, the place, who it is for. The clearer your site says the job and the place, the easier it is for ChatGPT to name you for it.
4. Write one page for each question your customers ask. Use their words. Put the answer at the top, then the detail. "How much does a new hot water system cost in Perth?" "Which dog groomer in Morley takes walk-ins?" A short list, a small table and a few questions and answers make a page easy for ChatGPT to use.
5. Get talked about. Ask every happy customer for a review, wherever they like to leave it, and reply to each one. Get listed where your customers look: local directories, your industry association, local news. Use the same business name, phone number and address everywhere, so ChatGPT knows it is all you.
6. Ask ChatGPT yourself, every week. Ask the questions your customers ask, several times each, and count how often you are named. Then look at your website visitor numbers: visits sent by ChatGPT are marked "chatgpt.com". When those numbers move, you know what is working.
What does it take?
| What | Cost |
|---|---|
| Let ChatGPT in | Free |
| Your site on Bing | Free |
| A new page for each customer question | Your time, every month |
| Reviews, and a reply to each one | Free, every week |
| Asking ChatGPT and counting the answers | Your time, every week |
| The old way: an SEO agency on a contract | Thousands, six months, and built for Google, not ChatGPT |
Start with the free jobs. The weekly jobs are where most owners stop, and that is when the names change to someone else.
Does this actually work? Real businesses, real numbers.
These are clients on the Veloce AI Marketing System, which asks ChatGPT their customers' questions every week and does the jobs above.
- Castle Cove Laundry & Dry Cleaning, Sydney. In the week to 12 October 2026, ChatGPT named them in 20 of 46 answers to questions that never said their name. Visits to their website sent by ChatGPT: none in the four weeks before, 7 in the last four weeks.
- WS Docks, Mandurah. ChatGPT named them in 19 of 42 answers in the week to 14 October.
Wins shown here are real but chosen. Flat weeks exist too, which is why the questions get asked again every week.
Questions owners ask
Can I pay ChatGPT to name my business? No. OpenAI says ads do not change ChatGPT's answers. Ads are marked "sponsored" and kept apart from the answer. Anyone who promises you a guaranteed spot in ChatGPT's answer is promising something nobody can sell.
I already show up on Google. Am I in ChatGPT? Not always. They are separate. The only way to know is to ask ChatGPT what your customers ask, and count.
How long does it take? New pages take weeks to be found and read. Reviews and listings add up over months. That is why the count is done every week: it shows which way you are going.
Is it only ChatGPT? No. Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI answers work in a similar way: they read the web and name a few businesses. The same six jobs help with all of them.
If I only do one thing today? Type your website in and see who ChatGPT recommends for what you do. If it is not you, you know where you stand.
